More details on Mazda’s green tech

Mazda has released details of the fuel-saving tech that will be used in forthcoming models.A stop-start system is in the final stages of development and is claimed to offer a smoother restart than any competing system. The Smart Idle Stop System (SSIS) automatically stops the engine when at a standstill, starting it again using direct injection with the help of the starter motor.A new 2.2-litre, 182bhp, 295lb ft common-rail diesel engine will also enter the range. Not only will it be the most powerful oil-burner in Mazda’s range, it will also use a new ceramic-based material in the particulate filter that more effectively removes harmful particles from the emissions. The company has also developed a new plastic moulding technique that will help it further cut weight of its cars.Expect to see the new technology in production cars from next year, with the new Mazda 3 being the first model to get both the stop-start and 2.2-litre diesel.
