BMW has confirmed that it will not be producing an M version of the new Z4 roadster.
A BMW spokesman said the decision had been made due to the repositioning of the Z4 as more of a cruiser, rather than as a rival for the Porsche Boxster.
The spokesman said: “If we wanted to build the car we could, as we have the budget for it. The decision is a positioning one and has nothing to do with money.”
The Z4 will be offered as an M sport model instead, rather than being a full M car. This is likely to mean upgraded brakes, suspension and a body kit, as well as larger alloys, similar to other M sport offerings across its range.
By giving the Z4 more of a GT character, BMW is creating space in its range for a new model that would be more of a sports car. Potentially smaller, lighter and more of a true driver’s car, this new model could become the rumoured Z2.
