Transport secretary Geoff Hoon has quit his government post.
Hoon, along with business secretary Lord Mandelson, recently announced government incentives of up to £5000 for motorists buying electric cars.
The Labour Ashfield MP has come under pressure from motorists over the government’s plans to introduce a 50mph speed limit.
Hoon is expected to take up a role as an advisor to NATO and the European Union and he had recently been criticised for a £384 expenses claim including his TV license and gas bill.
His successor should be confirmed later, when Gordon Brown announces his new look cabinet after a reshuffle.
Hoon had been in the role since October 2008, when he took over from Ruth Kelly.
