Deal to buy the struggling coachbuilder will go through this week

Fiat is set to sign a deal to buy struggling Italian coachbuilder Bertone this week, according to trade union sources.

Fiat’s bid for Bertone was approved by the Italian industry ministry in August and it is set to invest 150 million euro (£135m) over three years in the firm.

CEO Sergio Marchionne has said Fiat will build Chrysler cars at its plant near Turin, although he hasn’t confirmed what models will be built.

Production is likely to resume at the plant in late 2011 after volume production ended in late 2005.

The design side of Bertone’s business has been unaffected by the collapse of the coachbuilders.
