Honda has confirmed it will put the Civic Type R Mugen into production, with just 20 cars being made for a starting price of £38,599 each.
Honda claim the price - which is around £12k more than the Ford Focus RS - is justified by the 237bhp (up on the standard Type R’s 208bhp) road racer’s bespoke production process.
Based on a Championship White Civic Type R, the Mugen has a thoroughly reworked 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine with new pistons, ECU, camshafts and exhaust. It accelerates to 62mph in 6.0sec and goes on to a 150mph top speed.
The thorough Mugen re-working includes brakes, suspension and an aero kit, complete with a giant rear spoiler.
Unlike earlier prototype versions of the Mugen Type R, however, the production-ready Mugen Type R does come with a pair of rear seats.
"Each Type R Mugen will be an exclusive, hand-built race car for the road," said Hiroki Toyoda, vice preseident of Mugen Euro. "When we launched the Civic Type RR saloon in Japan, we sold out of all 300 units in just six minutes. Given the interest we have already had from car enthusiasts in the UK and abroad, we hope to repeat that achievement."
