In addition Jaguar's design director Ian Callum has talked about the new Jaguar XJ's interior design.

"When you get into the car the first thing that you'll notice is a very sportry interior," he says. "It's not what you might expect.

"The car is very much a design-led car in terms of its aesthetics, but because of that we're very conscious of the packaging of the car.

"We're offering the most eclectic mix of colours, wood and trim - even the wheel design and even wheel colours, so when you choose your car you almost design your own personality into the car. So you can go for something very sporty to something very luxurious - and a whole lot of ideas in between.

"That choice of interior trim is very important indeed, and we've covered that more than we've ever covered it before.

"I always say my dream car is the next one, but I think this one is very good."

A satisfying rework of the X3 that usefully improves its handling, cabin finish, space and connectivity to make this BMW a class front-runner again
