Buemi drives a Red Bull F1 car on a frozen Montreal circuit and lake
22 January 2010

Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi has driven a Red Bull Formula One car on the frozen lakes of Montreal to promote the return of the sport to Canada.

Using special tungsten-studded Bridgestone tyres, Buemi first drove the car around the Gilles Villeneuve circuit before taking it onto the frozen Olympic Basin, which surrounds the circuit.

Canada was left off last year’s calendar, but has been reinstated for 2010.

Red Bull Racing has released a short video on You Tube showing Buemi in action.

Bloody Global Warming!

Am I the only one thinking this would actually make a fantastic 1st race to get some energy into the F1 Championships? Set for Mid-February when there is good light but temperatures are still below -20ºC. Those studs are amazing and under the control of a professional driver are just as safe as slicks. I'm sure people are imagining cars spinning off in all directions but to be honest that would be far from the case. I'm sure Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium has probably had the largest amounts of Multicar-Pile-ups in F1's history.

F1 on Ice sounds like a great twist. I'm convinced that many of the divers would love to take part.

I agree. We could also get 'celebrities' in to drive the cars, and maybe Simon Cowell would be available to judge how well they'd done. The finances from a TV phone-in vote would satisfy Bernie's requirements, so I think this is a goer.

If snorkels can be built into the helmets, why not.

All very interesting, but you seem to have forgotten about the 'Monte', were cars are racing on snow/ice/tarmac, all on one stage quite often.

Celebrity F1 on ice with Todd Carty exiting stage left, what fantastic viewing and endless hits on Yootube.
