Car company launches dog-friendly accessories at New York motor show

Honda has unleashed a sales drive aimed at an off-beat market - dog lovers.

The company has revealed a range of dog-friendly accessories fitted to the Honda Element small SUV, which is only on sale in the US, at today's New York motor show.

These include a cushioned pet bed, a pet restraint system, a load ramp, a rear ventilation fan, seat covers, a spill-resistant water bowl and dog orientated graphics that can be stuck to the car's exterior.

However, in the tradition of many a motor show launch, the items are currently only at the concept stage.

A decision as to whether to put them on the market will be made later this year, but Honda has previously invested significant amounts of time wooing dog lovers.

In 2005 it even launched a concept car, the WOW, at the Tokyo motor show that was designed specifically for carrying dogs.

Japan has more dogs and cats than children under 15.
