Premium hatchback coming, small SUV also under consideration

The Lexus LF-Ch hatchback concept is back on display at the Tokyo motor show.

It should become production reality by 2011 and it may be joined by a small Audi A5-rivalling SUV.

Lexus eyes supermini market

The car is seen here at its unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show.

Lexus says the bold new five-door hatch is designed specifically to appeal to a new, younger generation of buyers, with “compact dimensions, stylish packaging, unparalleled levels of quality and refinement, and sophisticated on-board technology”.

Aimed directly at the next-generation BMW 1-series and Audi A3, the production version of the 4.3m-long, front-drive LF-Ch is expected to appear later next year.

So far, only this five-door car has been given the green light for production. However, a compact SUV cannot be ruled out, given the booming nature of the market.

Either they have still not been able to find a really inspired car designer passionate about the Lexus brand or their philosophy is that this is all you are going to get for being at least a few grands cheaper than the BMWs and the Mercs.
