542bhp super-SUV uses the same V8 as the Quattroporte GTS, with 40bhp less than the Levante Trofeo

Maserati has pulled the covers off of the Levante GTS, a V8-engined, second-tier super SUV to sit beneath the range-topping Trofeo

Where the Trofeo gets 582bhp from its Ferrari-derived 3.8-litre V8, the GTS uses the 542bhp V8 of the Quattroporte GTS. Maserati's Q4 four-wheel drive system is also fitted, allowing a 0-62mph time of 4.2sec and a top speed of 181mph. 

Maserati claims 20.9mpg and 313g/km of CO2 emissions for the model. 

Sportier styling than the regular, V6-powered Levante puts the GTS in line with the Trofeo, although Maserati says the GTS is more sophisticated. New alloy wheels are also fitted to mark out the model. 

Inside, it gets a premium audio system and upgraded leather upholstery, while the gear selector has been redesigned. The GTS is also the first Levante to get full LED headlights – a feature that is likely to now be rolled out across the rest of the range. 

The GTS is making its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside the Trofeo, which is making its European debut.

Prices for the GTS are yet to be revealed, but it’s likely to carry a considerable premium over the £79,125, V6-engined Gransport.
