Honda will unveil its Urban SUV concept car at the Detroit motor show that will become a new baby SUV. Seen here in images leaked on the internet ahead of its premiere, the production version of the Urban SUV Concept is expected to go on sale within the next three years.

The new car, which is widely tipped to be based on the Honda Jazz, will rival the Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Mokka. It is likely to be spun off the new Honda Jazz platform, which is due in the next two years, and with which the firm is targeting sales of up to 400,000 units a year in America and Europe.

Unlike with previous generations of the car, Honda is giving its global regions freedom to develop the Jazz to suit local tastes. The European version is expected to be built at the firm's base in Swindon.

The baby SUV is a key part of Honda president Takanobu Ito's ambitious plans to double global sales to six million cars a year by 2017.

Skoda's new Octavia is refreshingly free from huge 'blades' slashed through its bodyside like every new Vauxhall, Mercedes and now, unfortunately, Honda. I'm sure this is a fashion that will soon date horribly. It's like bus companies who try to paint swoopy streamlining onto their box-shaped buses. It's unconvincing and ugly.

Honda's designers aren't on a good run at the moment - the CR-Z, refreshed Civic, CR-V... They need this to be a good looker!

Driving past the Honda dealership is becoming more and more difficult to stomach!

+1     I had a look around the new Honda dealer showroom last week. The Civic actually looks worse in the metal which i did not think possible. The rest of the range either ugly or bland and terribly overpriced.Honda have a lot of work to do.

Know the full description for the position you are advertising. In particular you should know the following before you write the job ad: the responsibilities of the job, the salary, the benefits and the position requirements. Thanks.

Nissan caught all the car makers unawares with it's Juke. Now all are playing catch-up. Vauxhall Mokka, Chevrolet's Trax, Ford Ecosport, etc. Peugeot and Renault are cooking up their versions of the mini-SUVs.

With this model three years away it would be an understatement to say that Honda is late to the mini-SUV party.

I agree Honda appears to be playing catch-up, but if they get the styling right, they could have a great product on their hands. I think the current Jazz looks great (probably the best looking car of the entire Honda range in the UK), and this could be the product to demonstrate that Honda have got their design flair back!

Sorry I was laughing at your comment

"probably the best looking car of the entire Honda range in the UK"

It doesnt have a lot of in house competition with the other 3 models Honda sells..... the Civic, CR-Z, and CR-V....oh wait are they still making the Accord? I haven't seen one of them in years! Honda really need to get their act together, Honda's used to be cool. Remember the HR-V, CR-X, NSX, Prelude, Intergra... where did it all go wrong?

Toyota who first launched a supermini-based SUV (B-SUV, in recent years,) to the European market in mid-2009 with the Urban Cruiser.

Being desperately practical......

If this has a larger interior volume than the Jazz on which it is based and it is fitted with Honda's clever rear seats, this could be one serious load lugger!

Honda clearly have realise that they need to produce a couple of "me too" models to get themselves back in the game but they have the potential now to show what they can do and make the best in class.

It's all about the twisties........
