New petrol and diesel engine range will be know as 'Ingenium' and will be built near Wolverhampton

Jaguar Land Rover's new four-cylinder engine family will be called Ingenium, the company has revealed.

The new engines will be built at a new facility next to the M54 motorway north of Wolverhampton.

Autocar understands that the first pre-production diesel Ingenium engines are about to come off the line. Petrol engine production will start in 2015.

The Ingenium engine will first be fitted to the upcoming Jaguar XE baby saloon, which should arrive in showrooms in 12 months time.

JLR has not released any more details about the new engines, other than to claim that they will offer class-leading performance and economy.

A version of the Ingenium four-pot engine will also find its way into an upcoming hybrid version of the Range Rover Sport. A very high power petrol Ingenium four-cylinder could also be used in the Jaguar F-Type.
