The price of Veyron ownership

Richard Bremner
Most of us probably won’t be too disposed to sympathising with Bugatti Veyron owners over the maintenance costs they’ll face when running one of these magnificent machines – you practically have to be a billionaire to afford one – but you can understand why anyone might wince at some of the bills that Volkswagen’s finest can run up.

A routine service, for instance, costs £12,866 or the price of a middling Polo, whereas an annual service for a Ferrari Enzo is £1680, which seems like a bargain by contrast.

Bugatti Veyron vs Bugatti EB110

Buying new rubber for the Veyron will produce similarly heart-freezing bills, a set of four tyres costing £23,500, in part because they have to be capable of 253mph, more than 100mph faster than Concorde’s landing speed.

Worse news still is that at every fourth tyre change the Veyron’s rims must be stress tested for cracks – a sensible precaution in a car this fast – and replaced if they are found wanting at a cost of £7050 per corner.

For all these reasons, it’s not surprising to learn that one owner has taken to having his Veyron trailered to his favourite roads and following it there by executive jet, an arrangement that works out cheaper than driving the Bugatti several hundred miles to reach the dream Tarmac.

All of which is guaranteed to keep the Veyron out of reach of 99.9 per cent-plus of all car buyers, even if it should depreciate colossally. And, despite these maintenance costs, even that looks unlikely.

£1680 to service an Enzo! If that's correct then put in to context, that is a bargain compared to the cost of the basic service on my 325i which cost just over £300 - a car that piddles into total insignificance compared to the £450k, 210+mph, 660Bhp, exotically made Ferrari. And I believe a major service on my mainstream jam jar may cost around £500. Ridiculous!

Yeah I wonder how many Enzo owners walked away from their cars service only £1680 poorer....

But seeing as VW make a loss of £2 million on each one it's surely still quite good value? Relatively speaking of course...

crashbangwallop January 14, 2010 10:46 AM

Given their rarity, the Bugatti's are never going to depreciate significantly.  What does an EB110 go for these days?

and how much is insurance for these bugatti's, confused.com

What on earth do they DO in one of these 13 grand services?!  I would love to hear VW's justification for that.

I can just about imagine being so filthy rich that I might be tempted to buy one of these things, but perhaps perversely I really can't ever imagine being happy with handing over 13k for a boggo service - imagine what that becomes after the spanner monkey has finished sucking air over his teeth!

If I was Bernie-rich then the car may even seem like some sort of value, but I think no matter how wealthy I was I'd always baulk at the feeling that I was being fleeced.  Pah.

'Ere yer go mate ... (wiping his oily hands on the seat of his overalls) - aahv dun yer plugs - well 12 of 'em - couldn't get to the ones at the back - and yer oil - 7 litres of Halford's 20-50, filled up yer washer bottle and checked t'  tyres - that'll be £12,866 and 22 pee ... or 12 grand fer cash  ;o) ...

Go on Richard, give us a clue, who's that "one owner" you've learned about...? ;)

@crashbangwallop - £150k regularly, saw one go at auction in Oct 09 for £200k on the nose. If it's an SS it'll be even more.

@kcrally - think I remember Arash Farboud looking into ownership prospects, said it would be something like £24,000 annual premium!

What ever else the Bug may or may not be (and I suspect much of the raving from he journos is down to the being overawed by the price) the one thing is most certainly is is vulgar. And every time I read something like this it gets just that little bit more vulgar.

Evo ran a story on this a few months back, veyron seemed ridiculously expensive to run compared to about every other hypercar.

I wonder how it would get on if you saved a bit of money and missed a few stamps in the service book? ;)

Following it there in a private jet? - there are names for people like that - and it's not 'Geniune Car Enthusiast'

Amanitin January 15, 2010 10:17 AM

I wouldn't think a 'genuine car enthusiast' buys a veyron in the first place.

Even people who don't know what money looks like or the cost of a loaf of bread would wince at these costs!,it would be cheaper to hire than own, wouldn't it!?
