Kia’s chief designer Peter Schreyer has told Autocar the firm could launch a new sports car, limo and city car as part of its future model line up.
Ex-Audi man Schreyer has been overseeing a transformation in Kia’s design and was heavily involved in Audi’s TT project, which helped transform the brand. He revealed that the Mazda MX-5 was an inspiration for Kia, too.
“I’m a big fan of the MX-5,” said Schreyer. “Such a car would do Kia brand a lot of good.” Schreyer has previously said the rear-drive sports coupe, based on the firm’s 2008 Kee concept, did “not need to be very fast or very powerful, but it should be compact, affordable and fun – a true sports car.”
Schreyer said the firm was planning to make Mercedes S-class-sized limo based on the Hyundai Genesis’s rear-wheel drive platform, although such a car was unlikely to be sold in Europe.
On the subject of a city car, Schreyer said the growing popularity of this sector in the US could lead to Kia making its own small car.
“Why not?” he said. “America is moving to small cars, like the Mini and Fiat 500.”
