Dodge Caliber and Jeep Commander in the UK by 2006

Chrysler have unveiled two new vehicles at the Frankfurt motor show – the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Commander – and both will be available in the UK in right-hand drive from next year.

The Dodge Caliber marks a series of new Dodge products coming to the UK. This five-door hatchback will be powered by VW’s acclaimed 2.0-litre diesel powerplant as well as Chrysler’s petrol ‘world engines’ and is expected to compete with the Ford Focus C-Max.

The New Jeep Commander is the first seven-seater in the company’s 60-year history. Similar in size and shape to the Grand Cherokee, it also borrows the off-roader’s four-wheel-drive system, suspension and powertrains.

While petrol engines will range from a 3.7-litre 210bhp V6 to the 5.7-litre 330bhp Hemi V8, the Mercedes-sourced 3.0-litre diesel V6 is likely to be the biggest seller in Europe. Prices are expected to start from £30,000.

Jeep also displayed its intent to enter the compact 4x4 market with two concept cars at Frankfurt. The Patriot and the sportier Compass share Jeep family traits such as rounded headlamps and seven-slot grille, but aim to blend Jeep’s proven off-road ability with lower prices and better fuel economy. Jeep say production-ready vehicles, in similar guises to both concepts, could be built as early as next year.
