Seat has unveiled the Leon Twin Drive Ecomotive at its Martorell R&D facility near Barcelona.
The hybrid concept will spawn a production vehicle, possibly by 2014.
Production versions of Twin Drive Seats will be able to run on purely electric power in urban areas, but will switch to an internal combustion engine – most likely diesel-fuelled – for longer journeys.
The Leon Twin Drive concept, which for the moment runs on lithium-ion batteries, also gives an indication of the future direction of Seat’s green models. The company said in a statement: “The eventual phasing out of the internal combustion engine in future Ecomotive models is on the agenda.”
It is also likely that any future hybrid or alternative fuel technology developed by Seat will eventually be rolled out across the Volkswagen group.
