January becomes the 15th-straight monthly fall in sales

Car sales in the US have fallen by 37 per cent, with the Big Three all reporting substantial reductions for their year-on-year January sales.

Sales for Chrysler’s three brands, including Jeep and Dodge, fell by 54.8 per cent compared with January 2008. As a single brand, Chrysler faired even worse, reporting a 68.9 per cent downturn and sales of just 10,685 units.

General Motors was 48.8 per cent down on January last year, with Ford down by 40.2 per cent.

A few manufacturers experienced a January-to-January sales rise, though. Hyundai sales rose 14.3 per cent, while Kia and Subaru increased the number of cars sold by 3.5 per cent and 8 per cent respectively.

It is the 15th-straight monthly fall in sales, and a 27-year low for the US car industry.
