Scrappage scheme forces car maker to increase workforce

Nissan has taken on 150 new staff due to an increase in orders because of the scrappage scheme.

This positive step comes just months after Nissan had to cut 1200 jobs at the Wearside plant due to falling sales. The new staff will be employed on short-term contracts.

Strong sales of the Qashqai have seen the mini-SUV enter the top 10 best-selling cars in the UK.

A Nissan spokesman said that the success of the UK-built model is a positive sign for the British economy.

“Because every Qashqai is built at Nissan's Sunderland plant, its success is a shot in the arm for UK manufacturing and the British economy,” she added. "We're delighted with the Qashqai's jump into the top 10 best-sellers list.”
