Sixth-gen Golf outsells Ford's Fiesta by more than 15,000 units

The sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf has remained as Europe’s top selling car for a fifth month running.

The Golf sold 37,662 units in August, which was a 39.5 per cent increase on the amount sold in 2008. So far in 2009, 376,013 units have been sold.

The Ford Fiesta was Augusts’ second biggest selling car with 21,648 units, ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa with 19,818 units sold in third.

Volkswagen was also Europe’s top selling brand in Europe in August with 104,589 units sold, ahead of Ford with 62,762 and Opel/Vauxhall with 56,894.

JATO Dynamics, which provided the data, said year-on-year sales were up in all of Europe’s big five markets – UK, Spain, Germany, France and Italy – in August.

David Di Girolamo, head of JATO, said: “We are not by any means seeing a complete market recovery, but with the five biggest markets now all heading in the right direction, we can certainly feel very encouraged.

“The holiday period during August always sees lower volumes sold, but at least the August figures continue the European trend towards improved sales, and although the overall year-to-date figure remains down by 7.3 per cent, we have seen a 1.2 per cent improvement over July.”
