Go-faster version of Audi's S8 will arrive in the UK next January, priced from £97,700
5 August 2015

A more powerful version of the Audi S8, called the S8 Plus, is set to go on sale in the UK from January. Audi claims the 597bhp super-saloon will become the "pinnacle of sporty performance" in the luxury car class.

Powering the S8 Plus is the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine used by the standard 513bhp S8, but with power boosted by 84bhp. Torque peaks at 516lb ft in normal operation, but an overboost function can temporarily lift that to 553lb ft. Audi claims the S8 Plus can reach 62mph from rest in 3.8sec - making it the fastest S8 model yet.

The S8 Plus's top speed is limited to 155mph, but an optional dynamic package can lift that figure to 189mph. The dynamic package also includes carbon-ceramic brakes and a modified sports exhaust system.

The standard features list has been increased for the S8 Plus to include ambient lighting, full leather interior, power-assisted doors and a DVD player. The car sits on 21in alloy wheels. Rivals include the Mercedes-AMG S63, which produces 577bhp from its twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine.

The S8 Plus is priced from £97,700 - almost £17,000 more than the standard S8.

Our Verdict

Audi A8

The Audi A8 is a highly capable and desirable luxury saloon that's very easy to live with, despite its flaws

I wonder if Jaguar will update the XJR's 5.0 V8 now? It currently pumps out 550 HP/680 Nm but is already producing 575 HP/700 Nm in the Project 7 and is apparently capable of 600 HP+.

Didn't they just do an update on the XJ range? I like the XJR, it's the one current car Jaguar produce that I desire more than it's direct competition.

Nearly 600 bhp in a big fat saloon! Why? 250 is plenty for this sort of device. You are not going to do track days with it. Outside of Germany you can only really cruise at 80-90 mph without losing your license so basically it's just masturbation - my engine's bigger than yours. Credit to the manufacturers for identifying that there are a load of people out there with literally more money than sense - but if anyone ever drives them at more than about 20% of their ability I'd be amazed.
I reckon Citroen are on to something with their DS brand. I'd far rather buy a supremely comfortable car with loads of toys to play with that will accelerate to 60 in less than 7 seconds and cruise quietly at 85 than this rubbish. Ideally it would be an estate as well so - best Audi? That will be a diesel A6 Avant. Or, of course the new R8!

I genuinely didn't know Audi made an S version of the current A8! There didn't seem any point as the A8 has no more space in it than an A6. So I guess this is Audi's most pointless car with it costing so much more than an S6.

I love it, It still looks handsome despite its age. I remember watching a V8 R8 get totally spanked by an S8. Awesome piece of kit!

Yeah, can't wait for these to filter down into the hands of minicab drivers in a few years...

6 August 2015
I am surprised that with Audi's hunger to offer more bhp in its saloons/hatches than any other rival, we have never seen a RS8. Should one exist, I wouldn't be surprised if it came close to 700bhp.

What is the point of this car? if you want luxury and power an S6 already has enough of this.

I have no problem at all with the madness of these intentionally mad cars. But to claim it is the pinnacle of the type is to willfully ignore the far madder S65.
