Autocar attempts to lap the Nürburgring in record time
5 October 2007

Autocar has set more than a few world records over the years; you can expect to read more about them in these archive reports over the coming weeks. The production car lap record of the infamous Nürburgring is one of the most significant. In 1997 the fastest lap time recorded by a production car went to the Nissan Skyline GTR. But the Skyline, which set that time of 7min and 59sec, was free of the speed limiter standard on UK versions, so it was discounted and the record was left open. We sent four of the fastest production cars on sale to the 'Ring in 1997, along with two-times Le Mans winner Robert Nearn, and our own Steve Sutcliffe. Click on the gallery above to find out which of the cars left the 'Ring ten years ago with a record title.

Diesel version of Skoda’s junior SUV is unobtrusive and undemanding, but we’d still go for the silkier petrol version of the Karoq
