The McLaren MP4-12C Spider has been given its first public airing at the Pebble Beach concours d'elegance

The McLaren MP4-12C Spider has made its public debut at the Pebble Beach concours d’elegance. The car was shown to a selected audience at the Gooding & Company Auction preview.

The MP4-12C Spider comes equipped with a retractable hard top folding roof that can be raised or lowered in 17secs at speeds of 19mph. Sharing its carbon monocell chassis architecture with the Coupe, the 12C Spider should have great structural stiffness.

All MP4-12C models have been subject to a raft of changes for the 2013 model year. This means an increase in power from 592bhp to 616bhp and revisions to the 7-speed SSG twin-clutch gearbox. The Spider’s weight gain of 40kg over the hard-top means its performance suffers only marginally. Both cars hit 62mph from rest in 3.1 seconds, whilst there is only a tenth in it at 100mph (6.0 seconds v 6.1).

Both cars faster to one hundred than the iconic McLaren F1. The top speed of the Spider is 204mph.

At £195,500, the MP4-12C Spider is slightly cheaper than its main rival, the Ferrari 458 Spider, which is £198,906. McLaren is now taking orders, with cars expected to arrive early in 2013.

Looks better in black

OK, so this might be the 'public' reveal but the Spider looks so much better in black - as I saw on Saturday at Brands Hatch when one was at the bottom end of the paddock.

Unfortunately my photos aren't up to reproduction! Maybe someone else out there spotted it
