The winner of the World Car of the Year award will be revealed at the New York motor show in April

The Audi A8, BMW 5-series and Nissan Leaf are the finalists for the World Car of the Year award.

Announced in Geneva, the three finalists have been picked by 66 judges from a shortlist of 10 that had also included the Audi A1, Mercedes SLS and Volvo S60.

The Leaf has already been named European Car of the Year and will be hoping to add that award when the overall World Car of the Year is announced on 21 April at the New York motor show.

Finalists for the World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards have also been announced ahead of the winners being crowned in New York.

The Ferrari 458 Italia, Mercedes SLS AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo are up for the Performance Car Award, the Leaf is up for the Green Car award alongside the BMW 320d ED and Chevrolet Volt, and the 458 is also up for the Car Design award with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Aston Martin Rapide.
