Hamilton and Button top the field in the first practice session for Sunday's Spanish GP

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button topped the time sheets in the first free practice session for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Hamilton finished more than half a second ahead of Button; Mercedes' under-pressure driver Michael Schumacher was next fastest in third.

Red Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel had set the early pace before ending up in fourth and fifth respectively. Schumacher's team-mate Nico Rosberg completed the top six.

The last half hour of the session saw little improvement on the times set in the first hour, as the teams concentrated on high-fuel set-ups.

The only runner not to set a time was Sauber's Pedro de la Rosa, who was sidelined with a gearbox issue.
