Henrik Fisker, who made his name as the designer of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and DB9, is turning his attention from re-skinning top-spec BMWs and Mercs to the creation of "eco-chic" hybrids.
Fisker has teamed up with American hi-tech firm Quantum Technologies, which is developing a hybrid system called "Quantum Drive".
The joint venture, Fisker Automotive, aims to bring green technology to the luxury end of the market. The first car is due to be launched at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2008.
The as-yet-unnamed car is due to cost less than $100,000 (£50,000), and the initial production run is anticipated at 15,000 cars a year.
Development of the car is already underway at the firm’s Californian base. Details are scarce, but Quantum says that it will be a plug-in hybrid, capable of being recharged via any standard US domestic 110v electricity socket. Fisker also says that it will come with "the most advanced comforts that are anticipated in a luxury car."
“Developing a premium luxury green car which also delivers attractive design can make a difference," said Fisker. “We want people to drive beautiful fast cars that make environmental sense – cars that are eco-chic.”
