FORD HAS UNVEILED this incredible roadster, based on the Ford GT, at the Los Angeles SEMA motor show today.
Inspired by the 1966 Sebring-winning GTX1 roadster, essentially a GT40 with the roof lopped off, the modern-day Ford GTX1 will be built in limited numbers next year.
Conceived by the Ford Special Vehicle Team division’s engineering supervisor in his spare time during the development of the GT coupe, the GTX1 was created for Ford by American coachbuilder Gennadi Design, best known for its stretch Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Like the GT, the GTX1 keeps the overall look of the original car, but replaces the twin scoops over the engine bay with a pair of fairings acting as wind deflectors behind the occupants’ heads. According to Gennadi’s founder Mark Gerisch, these cut cabin turbulence.
The roof consists of four body-colour panels which can be stored inside the car, allowing it to be a hardtop, targa or full convertible.
If you want a GTX1, first you’ll need a Ford GT (available in the US for $151,000 or £85,000) and then you need to stump up another $38,000 (£21,000) for the conversion.
Which makes it something of a bargain alongside the £189,950 Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster or the £127,050 Ferrari F430 Spider.
