Mitsubishi releases teaser images of the sharp-looking new L200 pick-up

These are the first official pictures of the replacement for Mitsubishi's ageing L200 pick-up. The new, Thai-built L200 will make its debut at the Bologna motor show in December before going on sale in the UK on March 1 next year with prices expected to be little more than the current car's £12,066 entry-level (£10,299 as a commercial vehicle).

The new pick-up will be available as single cab, club cab or four-door double cab, with the successful Animal and Warrior trim levels joining the base model from launch. Mitsubishi promises the new car will be a much better drive, with permanent four-wheel drive and new independent front suspension likely to bring a big step forward in ride and refinement.

Like the current car, the new L200 is powered by a 2.5-litre turbodiesel, but it now features Euro-4 compliance and direct common-rail injection, and for the first time it will be offered with an optional four-speed auto in addition to the standard five-speed manual. Base cars will offer around 136bhp, with up to 170bhp for the range-topper and both stability control and traction control available.

Like Nissan's new Navara, which borrows heavily from its Pathfinder sibling, the new L200 is a much sharper-looking beast than its predecessor. The styling was previewed by Mitsubishi's 2005 Daker Rally campaigner, Truck Evolution, and borrows cues from the Pajero Evolution racer.
