Transport minister Ruth Kelly will stand down from her position

Ruth Kelly is to stand down from her position as Transport Secretary in the next cabinet reshuffle. Ms Kelly says she is leaving the government in order to spend more time with her four children.

The announcement comes just weeks after Autocar revealed that Ms Kelly’s department plans to bring in a complex road tolling system as early as 2010. She has been Secretary of State for Transport since Gordon Brown formed his first cabinet in July 2007, and she denies that her resignation is a display of dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister’s leadership.

The cabinet reshuffle in which Ms Kelly will resign from the government could come as early as next week, after the Conservative party conference in Birmingham.
