SAIC's saloon concept will spawn both Roewe and MG versions

The Roewe N1 concept, one of the smartest-looking offerings at the Shanghai show, will be badged Roewe 350 when it reaches production, and could spawn a sporty MG version.

The car, which is earmarked for sale in both Europe and North America, has been developed on an all-new platform that will also underpin a more overtly sporty MG model, which is set to wear the name MG4.

Powering the production version of the N1 will be a range of existing four-cylinder engines – essentially updated versions of the old Rover K-series powerplant purchased by parent company SAIC including 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units.

SAIC is also negotiating with potential partners, including General Motors and Volkswagen, on a diesel engine supply deal. Rumours around Shanghai suggested the N1 could receive Volkswagen’s new 89bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine.
