German entrepreneur August Horch founded the company back in 1910, but he left it in 1920. Audi merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer to form Auto-Union in 1932. Each company did its best to occupy a specific class and avoid overlapping.
Volkswagen purchased a battered Auto-Union from Daimler-Benz in 1966 and later added NSU to the fold. Audi came out on top when Wolfsburg began rationalising its brands after that.
