This seems a good time to look at a segment that is due for a revival. There’s a reason why American primary pickup trucks aren’t sold globally: they’re often far too big. Wildly popular models like the Ford F-150, the Chevrolet Silverado and the Ram 1500 dwarf trucks considered big by global standards, like the Volkswagen Amarok and the Toyota Hilux. The latest crop of pickups is more fuel-efficient than ever before but the V8 engine continues to reign supreme in the segment.

That’s not to say America’s major truck manufacturers can’t think small when they need to. Historically, millions of small pickups have meandered across the nation’s roads. Some have shared an architecture with a passenger car while others have even dared to downsize to a four-cylinder engine.
