Ford experimented with front- and mid-engined models, two- and four-door variants and even more spacious body styles designed with families in mind. Its positioning as a two-door was cemented in the minds of enthusiasts by the end of the 1970s so executives never dared to stray far from it.

This has now changed and Ford has just introduced an electric, four-door SUV called Mustang Mach E.
