Fiat/Chrysler chief appears to put launch plans on ice

Fiat/Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne appears to have put the much discussed relaunch of Alfa Romeo in the United States on hold.

The Italian told reports at the Detroit motor show that Alfa must first prove it has "a right to exist as a separate brand" before being expanded.

He added that if Alfa could not make a good product and business case for the US then it would remain a Europe-only brand.

Prior to Fiat's tie-in with Chrysler last year, it had been aiming to launch Alfa in the US in 2010 as part of its centenary celebrations.

Why does Autocar omit the date in the News?

Re: Alfa's US launch 'on hold'

I love Alfa Romeo and thats what thousands like me feel. They are the only brands with passion and as rightly mentioned by Mr Clarkson on TG, they are the heart and soul of Automotive world. Its demise or whatever, would shake up the automotive world. They have nice cars and no doubt about it but its the Automotive media for spreading wrong perception and fiat's management to blame I think.

At least Fiat can ask Ferrari to step in. After all they own them and Ferrari can make Alfa's handling and driving characteristics better.

I think Fiat cant handle such a lovely brand and should sell it to VW or BMW so that Alfa can get all the recognition and sales it deserves.

Love you Alfa!!!!
