Toyota is recalling 2.9million cars globally in the midst of the Takata airbag issue, which affects around 100million cars in total, reports Reuters.
46,604 cars in the UK are affected, and are limited to 13,890 Auris and 32,714 Toyota Yaris models. Affected cars were built between December 2002 and March 2004, and February 2007 and December 2012.
The recall concerns airbag inflators which if exposed to heat over a prolonged period, could explode with too much force, or deploy inadvertently.
Toyota is working with the DVLA to determine affected cars, and the timeframe of the total recall is uncertain, as owners may not immediately act upon the recall.
The fix, depending on the model, takes between 30 minutes and three hours, and can be carried out at owners’ local Toyota dealer. A Toyota spokesman advised owners with concerns to speak to their local Toyota dealer.
Customers will be notified in due course while the dealer network is prepared for the recall.
