Auris HSD to go on sale later this year; will account for more than half of Auris sales

Toyota will have hybrid versions of all its European models on sale by the end of the decade.

The first car in Toyota's range to be fitted with its Hybrid Synergy Drive system, the Toyota Auris HSD, will go on sale in the second half of this year and is expected to account more than half of all Auris sales.

It is powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 60kW electric motor powered mated to a 27kW nickel metal hydride battery. Total power is 134bhp, and the car can run in electric-only mode at up to 30mph for 1.2 miles.

Although exact details have yet to be released, Toyota has confirmed it will emit less than 100g/km of CO2 and have the performance of a 2.0-litre diesel engine, despite having significantly lower NOx emissions. It meets Euro5 emissions standards, and is expected to comply with future Euro6 requirements.

Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
