The forthcoming Audi RS5 will use an updated version of the last RS4’s 4.2-litre V8, retuned to give more power with fewer emissions.
The new range-topping Audi RS5 performance coupe, seen here testing today at the Nurburgring, will take the V8’s power up to around 450bhp. The Audi RS5 will use a quattro drivetrain with Audi’s double-clutch S Tronic transmission, the first time an Audi RS product has featured twin-clutch technology.
The RS5 also employs what Audi calls active aerodynamics – the deployable rear spoiler visible in our pictures, available for the first time on the A5 – and Audi’s new torque vectoring system operating on the rear differential. This allows the car to deliver torque to individual wheels to improve traction.

The Audi RS5’s styling will be distinct from the S5’s. The mild blacked out disguise on this test car doesn’t hide the new front end, with bigger air intakes styled like the R8’s, deeper sill covers and the restyled rear’s two huge oval exhaust pipes.
The Audi RS5 is expected to go on sale in the UK in December. Prices could be as high as £50,000, reflecting the premium charged for the old RS4, and to provide some space between the RS5 and the £42,980 TT RS Coupe.
The RS5 Coupe will be followed by an RS5 Roadster next year, completing the A5 family and providing the replacements for the RS4 saloon and cabrio.
