Slotting a 6.2-litre V8 into the CLK results in a car that's faster to 60mph than a Lamborghini Countach, but the Merc doesn't involve you in its huge capabilities as a 911 would. And a Carrera S costs the same.

What's new? AMG's latest new engine is slotted into the unsuspecting CLK, offering the possibility of nailing the 0-62mph sprint in only 4.6 seconds. The all-alloy unit creates a stunning 474bhp and 464lb ft of torque - all without forced induction - but it does have a capacity of 6.2 litres and revs to 7500rpm. There are also new composite brakes on the front wheels, retuned sports suspension and a seven-speed automatic gearbox with a proper manual mode accessed by revised paddles behind the steering wheel. Cosmetically, the body kit is a little sharper, and the wheels a bit lighter. What's it like? A hot rod, that's for sure. Civilised, quiet and faintly rumbly at low revs. All the controls are light and effortless to operate. And then you press the throttle hard and the small car with a big engine goes very fast indeed. The power delivery is different to that of other AMGs, with less kick in the back and more revs needed for overtaking. But despite the pace and grip, the CLK isn't the most involving drive. Should I buy one? If you want a very fast CLK, yes, but a Porsche 911 Carrera S costs the same. Adam Towler
