Audi is pushing on with its introduction of diesel models at the LA motor show

Audi is to add four new diesel models in its North American range as the firm continues to push sales of oil-burners in the US.

Diesel versions of the A6, A7, A8 and Q5 have been launched at the Los Angeles motor show and will all get variations on the 3.0-litre V6 diesel, branded in the US as CleanDiesel.

In the A8, the only car that Audi has released specifications for, the engine develops 240hp and 406lb ft.

The addition of the four new models increases Audi’s diesel range in the States to six – the A3 is available with a 2.0-litre TDI, and the Q7 has used the 3.0-litre V6 since September – giving it more diesels than rivals BMW and Mercedes.

Our Verdict

The Audi A4 saloon is bigger, roomier and more aerodynamic than its predecessor

The Audi A4 is an improvement over the previous version, but isn't good enough to topple the BMW 3-series

I'm not sure why they are bothering. Thankfully the US has stronger pollution laws than the UK which means diesel is not practical.

Which is why Audi are introducing it in  expensive cars. As diesel is ridiculously expensive when "clean".

I also call the A3 2.0 TDI an expensive car.

If their e-diesel fuel production is as good as it sounds then it makes sense to start pushing it in the USA. If it's affordable that could be a real breakthrough.

Although sales of diesel cars in the USA are only about 7% of total they are rising by 27% per year for the last two years.

65% of Audi A3 sales in the USA are diesel. Federal legislation means diesel cars are available for sale in all 50 states.

Maxecat those percentages are skewed by that fact Audi does not offer the 1.4 or the 1.8 petrol engine in the A3 in the US. If US customers wish to have an economical A3 they have no choice but to go for the Diesel. This is Audi's way of forcing diesel into its marketing development.

So according to Sandy thankfully the USA has stronger pollution laws than Europe which means diesel is not practical.

So how does that square with Audi's, and Mercedes/BMW's, promoting diesel car sales growth in the USA?

If you care to  read the websites of Motoring Trend or Forbes you will see that diesel car sales are growing strongly in the USA whilst electric and petrol Hybrid sales are not.

If you look up Euro 5 and Euro 6 rules you will see that whilst diesels produce more NOx than petrol cars Petrol cars produce more of the deadly CO. For Euro 6 it is direct injection petrol engined cars that are struggling to meet the same strict standards on particulates that diesels have.

There have been big changes to diesel fuel quality in the USA but sadly their standard petrol is only 91 ron and unsuitable for many small European petrol engines.

Audi is one of the popular car brand in the automobile industry and also very expensive one in the industry. The above image of the Audi car is just looking unanimous. I like all Audi models and they all are very stylish. Diesel versions of the Audi car A6, A7, A8 and Q5 have been lunched at the Los Angeles Motor Show.
