First pictures of Peugeot's new 407 Coupé bring few surprises

The successor to Peugeot’s iconic 406 Coupé is revealed in these first official pictures of the two-door 407, and as expected it looks strikingly similar to the Prologue concept , unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The new model is due to go on sale in the UK from January 2006.Peugeot has decided not to use 406 stylist Pininfarina, the lines of the new Coupé were produced by an in-house team. With its side vents, twin exhausts and bootlid spoiler the new car isn't as understated as the 406, but it remains a restrained style.

Although full details of the 407 line-up will have to wait until its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, we can reveal that the engine line-up. From launch there will be 160bhp 2.2-litre four and 211bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines, along with the Ford/PSA Peugeot-Citroen jointly-developed 205bhp 2.7-litre V6 diesel. The V6 HDI is already well known for its refined applications in Jaguar’s S-type and the Land Rover Discovery, and it is also due to appear in Citroen’s new C6. All engines will be married to a six-speed gearbox, either manual or automatic depending on model.

A safety package featuring ABS, ESP, traction control, seven airbags and emergency brake assistance will be included as standard, while the double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension is lifted directly from the 407 saloon. No price for the new Coupé has yet been decided, but expect the range to start at around £22,000 for the 2.2.
