Fiat has celebrated its return to the US for the first time since 1984 with a special edition 500

Fiat has delivered the first examples of its 500 in the US 27-years after the firm last sold cars in the market.

The first 500 examples of the Fiat 500 for the US are badged ‘Prima Edizione’ and have all been earmarked for Fiat enthusiasts.

All Fiat 500 Prima Edizione models come equipped with a 100bhp, 98lb ft Fiat 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol engine not yet offered in Europe, which is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The models are available in three colours – Bianco, Rosso and Grigio – and come with a sequentially numbered VIN number with a badge on the dashboard that corresponds to this.

All Fiat 500s for the US are built at Chrysler’s Toluca plant in Mexico. After deliveries of the Prima Edizione models are complete, the firm will begin sales of a specially developed 500 for the US called Fiat 500 Sport.

This gets softer suspension, subtly revised front and rear bumper designs, a slightly larger front grille and a revised aerodynamic package including wider sills. Pop and Lounge trim levels will be offered, too.

Sales of the 500C will start in the US later this year.
