Firm looking into four-cylinder models to make it better value

BMW is considering adding four-cylinders engines to the 5-series GT to make it more affordable, Autocar can reveal.

The company is looking at the 175bhp four-cylinder unit found in the 320d, which returns over 50mpg on the combined cycle, according to BMW sources.

Currently the 5-series GT starts at around £40,000, putting it out of reach of many 5-series saloon owners.

But the company would like to open it up to more customers, once the new niche has been established.

First up will be the twin-turbo diesel unit and then a cheaper four-cylinder could arrive.

“We are looking at the twin-turbo diesel and are likely to see that soon,” said the car’s product manager, Michelle Roberts, “nothing is confirmed yet but a four-cylinder diesel is also being looked into.”

What about the 523d GT?? That would put it in reach of those that have regular 5 series money.

I've seen one in the flesh. It makes the X5 seem old fashioned inside. The way BMW is and should be going next.

I look forward to the new 5 saloon if this is points the way.

Only the 'Executive' version has 4 seats as standard. The other verson has 5 as standard. So...no problem there then.

Re: BMW may do cheaper 5-series GT

Just walked round one in my local dealers,it's huge!, plus the fact it was in White didn't help, but to make such a large car, effectively a 4x4 on really low suspension with only seats for four as standard instead of five is just plain daft!, i mean do they think that it's only exec's that'll buy it?, what about families?, we might want to buy this type of car, i know it's an option, but why sell it as a four seater when everybody knows sometimes we need five!
