Jaguar has already taken 55 orders for the new XJ luxury saloon in the UK alone, the company has confirmed.

Some of the cars were sold at the glitzy London launch at the end of last week, but some orders were taken at dealerships from buyers who hadn’t yet seen the car in the metal.

The new XJ is crucial to Jaguar’s survival and features controversial styling, especially at the rear.

But Jaguar said this has not put buyers off and orders were on a par with the smaller XF saloon.

“Some of the orders were from people at the Saatchi Gallery launch," a Jaguar spokesman told Autocar, "but others came from people who had just seen pics on the internet. This rate of orders is the same as the XF and we are very pleased.”

Production is due to start in September and first deliveries are expected next January.
