First pictures of the all-new 3-series rivaling Lexus IS that will make its debut in Detroit

These are the first official pictures of the new Lexus IS , which will be unveiled at the Detroit motor show. The new car, which goes on sale later this year, has remained true to the Lexus LF-CC concept car seen at the Paris motor show.

The IS is longer and wider than the outgoing car, with a longer wheelbase, and delivers what is claimed as best in class knee room for rear passengers. The sharp exterior styling retains the concept’s full height grille and large air intakes. IS F Sport models get their own front bumper and grill designs.

The cabin, too, is very similar to the concept’s with its high centre console that splits the cabin, analogue clock and off-set gearshifter. The switches on the centre console are touch sensitive.

In the UK, the IS will be offered with two drivetrains, both using a 2.5-litre petrol V6. The standard car will be badged IS250, while the hybrid IS300h should be capable of emitting under 100g/km of CO2. The diesel will be dropped in favour of the hybrid.

The Lexus IS is a sleek junior exec that makes for an interesting alternative but lacks a decent diesel option

Toyota still haven't learned

Toyota still haven't learned about "premium" products, have they? Look at a Golf 7 or a new BMW 3-Series and the gradually evolving look is carefully planned, never shocking their faithful customer base. Always looking timeless and classy.

The last Lexus IS was a lovely car and a serious contender in the compact exec set, but I'm afraid this just looks like Manga gone mad.

It's a pity, because beyond the idiotic styling, you can guarantee it's a beautifully made product like all Lexii.

A Close Shave!

The grille looks like it was inspired by a Remington Razor!

The styling issues combined with the lack of a diesel engine will not help Lexus to make headway in to the UK market.  Good news for BMW, Audi & Jaguar.

Whilst appreciating the debate about Diesel vs Petrol,  a Hybrid may help in city use, but more often give poor MPG on motorways and rural roads.

im having one

While some people might disagree with the looks I think its the most interesting car in the class since the Alfa Romeo 159....all the other cars (bmw 3 series, audi a4...) looks so boring in comparison. However what I like about this car is the interior. Looks like a mini LFA to me. Add to that it comes with a V6 which sounds so much better than BMW's rather mundane turbo petrols. The dealbreaker is probably its much much more reliable and Lexus sales people are not as stuck up as BMW's one and service is also much much better. Bear in mind though I am not from the UK where petrol is expensive etc.
