Toyota Prius recall - our car is the first in the UK to be fixed

Dan Stevens
So after all the hype and reputation destruction, it’s cured by nothing more than plugging a non-descript box with a touchscreen into the car and pressing some buttons.

I’ve just had our new long-term Prius recalled and reprogrammed to cure the thing with the brakes, which has gone from being described as “there’s nothing wrong” to a full blown, country-wide recall.

Toyota issues Prius recall

It’s the first Prius in the UK to have the procedure carried out, so there was a little head-scratching from the blokes at our local Toyota outfit while they ran through the instructions that had just turned up from Toyota HQ, but the actual reprogramming took under two minutes.

If you’ve got a Prius, bargain on a maximum of 45 minutes, allowing for messing around with parking (which is always, always impossible at every dealership I go to.)

The boss at the dealership said they’ve been somewhat overrun by phone calls from customers, although rather too many of those calls are from people who are getting the throttle pedal and the brake issue mixed up. The Lexus dealer down the road is getting calls about the brake problem…

Standing in the dealership waiting for the service manager, I overheard a woman on the phone. “Well, while I’m here I’m going to get them to check the brakes as well because you never know, do you?” she was saying.

Actually you do know – if it’s not a Prius it isn’t going to have a brake problem. And what was she driving? An Aygo.

Just seen Chris Harris ex of Autocar on CNN talking about the Prius issue. His point was that PC's, Laptops and Ipods etc aren't expected to last more than a few years before they're outdated or just become unreliable. As cars become more reliant on computerised electronics he predicts they'll be technical right offs if the black box goes pop when the car is over 5 years old.

Only picked mine up on Friday. I was told the brake issue only applied in US and Japan. How things change! Looking forward to seeing how your long term impressions tie up with mine.

"It’s the first Prius in the UK to have the procedure carried out..."

No surprise there then. Making sure that journos and not end users are attended to as a matter of priority...

As if feeling left out in all the fun Toyota's steering has now joined he party begun by its go and stop pedal:

'cept for going, stopping and steering must say these are helluva fine cars.

recall or not, Priuses are donky, bad looking cars whose drivers are allowed to drive like complete plonkers in the name of economy.

I think i ll just need to buy a 6lt v12 S600 from '89 for £3.50 and run it 24hrs a day to balance out my street's Prius population - reckon it is 5% of the cars on the street (W2 central London).

COINCIDENTALLY, at least 5 of these Prius neighbours are all leftish, sandal wearing, armit smelling social weirdos that you would not invite for dinner as Clarkson says - EVER.

I absolutely love the angst and upset all these muppets go through because their Toyota is being recalled...

Hmmm what does a mechanic have in his tool box these days ? Nothing!

He just has a laptop and is now an auto technician. Tara tara .

I rue the days when we could tinker with our own cars with a srewdriver a spanner and a good earole.

Harry Boy,

I can understand your feelings, but please let me explain the two reasons why the Autocar car was done on Tuesday afternoon.

Firstly, we want to communicate as widely and quickly as possible to everyone, especially Prius owners, that this is an issue we are on top of and ready to deal with.  The recall was announced at 6.30 am UK time on Tuesday. Just over 24 hours later our dealers are equipped to install the upgrade on customer cars.

Secondly. Autocar has one of our cars; their office is not far from the dealer, so it was very simple to ask them to bring it in, effectively using that car for that dealer to learn the process.

Please be assured Toyota GB is doing everything we can to fix these issues as quickly as we can to minimise the disruption and concern it may cause owners.

This is the first time I've heard of brake systems needing 'software'.  Not impressed at all.  Looks like the predictions of Chris Harris will soon come true, at least for these electric cars.  And good riddance to them...

Given that this is a brake "feel" issue, rather than a lack of ability for the car to stop, it would be  good to hear about what the driver now thinks about the car's braking.

Well, is it actually improved or not? I assume that it wasn't that bad in the first instance, otherwise magazine road tests would have identified it...

Totally agree using Autocar car a good way of getting the word out afterall how many folk will read this article and comment spread word but would also love to know before and after comments

The Apprentice February 10, 2010 9:02 AM

Someone I know joked it was because the software for regenerative braking didn't want the car to stop until it had topped the battery up enough so delayed allowing the brakes on, after the mod the economy will drop by 10mpg.

Just a joke of course.

The Apprentice February 10, 2010 9:04 AM

Also quite right the journo's get done first for the sake of the masses. If Autocar staff were killed we would all suffer by having nothing to read but AutoExpuss!!!

coolboy February 10, 2010 10:49 AM

wow!! ... Uk's first Prius to be "upgraded" was the Autocar`s Prius...

amazing! so, that means that Toyota UK just received the upload sent by Taguchi sama in Japan and that`s it - Japanese never fail, so not check first if this REALLY works in our fleet cars...

good Autocar, do not forget to attach the seat belts in the buckles, and... just saying... mind the floor mats... and... you know... nowadays things aren`t as used to be...

next week the Autocar underlining will be;   UK`s Toyota magazine, in place of: the oldest car magazine...

our prius had the software update done about three months ago and then 2 weeks ago the driver reported having no brakes when he was approaching a roundabout on the A1. He managed to stop the car on a grass verge and then when continued driving the brakes returned again. Has this phenomena occured with other post s/w update cars? Toyota have tested the car and claim that there is no problem.
