BMW X4 - don't rule it out

Greg Kable
Got talking to a number of senior BMW officials this week at the launch of the new Mini Countryman. As we were sitting around in a sweltering Hamburg hotel bar devoid of air conditioning, chat turned to developments in the four-wheel drive ranks, and not surprisingly the subject of the X6 came up.

Criticized at launch for being neither a true off-roader nor a true sportscar, the X6 has now surpassed 80,000 sales worldwide since its launch at the back end of 2008 – and if current sales trends continue it’ll likely end up with over 100,000 by the end of the year.

That’s significantly more than the more conventional 6-series has achieved in the same period. Not bad for a car that many automotive industry analysis said would never sell in great numbers. BMW’s original sales target, by the way, was less than 20,000 per year.

Thing is, the unexpected showroom success of the X6 has left BMW high ups wondering whether they should push ahead with a smaller, more affordable X4 model that has apparently been on the drawing board in Munich for some time now. The BMW officials in Hamburg weren’t saying as much. But reading between the lines, it was clear they were fishing for thoughts on whether such a car warranted inclusion in the company’s future model line-up.

BMW considering new 'X4'

Having now seen the conservative route BMW has taken with the second-generation X3, it appears there could be scope for a more sporting X4 derivative off the same four-wheel drive platform – BMW’s answer to the three-door Range Rover Evoque if you will.

Suffice to say, it would provide BMW with the perfect basis for a X4 M model powered, perhaps, by the upcoming 1-series M Coupe’s 350bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine mated to an eight speed automatic – a combination what would likely be a big hit in the US, if nowhere else, admits one BMW manager I spoke to.

Having now concentrated production of the X3, X5 and X6 in the same factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the logistics involved in a possible X4 model don’t appear to be a limiting factor.

Most interesting of all, BMW will not deny an X4 is on the way.

Nice shot of the X6M, looks awesome. With the X6 being such a runaway success for BMW, I guess a scaled down version certainly looks like an idea worth considering.

bmw makes aircraft engines as well.

Uncle Mellow July 15, 2010 7:16 PM

Since BMW want to fill every niche , how about an X6 Convertible ? Then again , a stretched X5 might go well in China.

kcrally July 15, 2010 7:40 PM

the bmw x3, currently makes quite a successful rally raid cross country vehicle.

caboosemoose July 16, 2010 1:24 AM

Sorry, I don't believe for a moment that BMW only hoped to sell 20,000 units world wide per year of the X6. This is just the spiel they roll out to make the car look like a huge success.

MattDB July 16, 2010 9:11 AM

I saw one in matt black with black windows and wheels the other day.  Absolutely disgusting, and whats more the people getting out of it fitted the image perfectly.

Trying to find a positive but I'm struggling.

mcmikey July 16, 2010 9:21 AM

Agree with MattDB; every time I see one of these things I wonder who with even a modicum of taste would even consider such a monstrosity, I cant believe there are that many overpaid footballers out there. Fortunately despite where I live in North Yorks being predominantly a 4x4 culture its generally for the right reasons hence the abominable X6 doesn't figure on their radar. The 5 series GT is almost as hideous but again up here the buyers seem to be keeping away. When I visit London I just try to look the other way.

WFC Holden July 16, 2010 9:40 AM

Of course! You northerners are all blessed with instinctive good tast...as seen on Emmerdale - or perhaps it's just that you don't earn enough to buy this sort of thing until its clocked, creaking and at least third-hand.

Look, I posted a similar tongue-in-cheek comment on the main article of the new X3, but I seriously stand by what I said:

The X6, in aluminium trim (as opposed to black Shadowline) is actually a ver dinky looking thing - esp. compared to a Cayenne or even BMW's own X5.

The X6 makes the X5 look like a fuddy-duddy - if you don't have screaming kids why not have an X6?

And I think BMW's marketing department dictated Bavaria deliberately make the new X3 ugly - which from the side it certainly is - to make room for an X4 i.e. a smaller X6.

For those without brats - wait for the X4.

manicm July 16, 2010 1:33 PM

WFC Holden - that's a very elitist thing to say.

Vidge 123 July 16, 2010 2:08 PM

i think (and hope) his comment was as tongue in cheek as yours, otherwise yes it is!

X4, bring it on, i cant wait for the 9,000 pages of complaining about the car. What i dont get is if you dont like it THEN DONT BUY ONE!

Me although i wouldnt want an X6, i like the fact that i have the choice to not want one, as if greenies get their way we will all have none discript toyotas with 900cc engines.

Me i like the idea of a car that is 2 tonnes, as virtually the same storage space as a Classic mini and yet does 0-60 in under 5 seconds, Its such a wonderful 2 fingers to the establishment

rlg July 16, 2010 3:48 PM

I say let 'em build it if they think they'll sell. Plenty of individuals out there who want something different no matter how ridiculous other people think they are

AV July 16, 2010 9:08 PM

I too want to be free to buy a sports car with a high centre of gravity. I also want to be free to purchase an off roader that can't go off road. How ironic. How cool.

And look! Wow! I can have both in one oh-so-trendy wrapper!

I'll have a white one with big chrome wheels, the largest possible engine and blacked out windows.

The rest of you can laugh at me if you want to, but I know you're only jealous.

Out of my way plebs! I'll show you how a real man drives.

My only criticism of the X6 is that it's rear wheels look disproportionately small. Looks-wise it's alright but the X3 & X5 look hideously repulsive from all angles.

Chuffy July 17, 2010 10:49 AM

The marketing guys (see the lotus thread) need to get their collective heads around the idea of not promoting 4 wheel drive as an off road feature on a BMW.

No one here goes on about the Audi Quattro and its lack of ability in a field.

superstevie July 17, 2010 11:42 AM

agree with woigooken, that shot of the X6M almost positivley alright looking! lol

I don't really see the point of the X6 myself, but thats because its not aimed at me, I don't really want a 4x4 coupe. Besides, I couldnt afford one even if I wanted one.

As for the x4, i bet its only a matter of time before its built. And then there will be an x2 as well.

kevin2010 July 17, 2010 9:24 PM

I have to admit i hate ALL suv's because of who drives them, they are never used off road and to me are pointless.

I also have to say BMW have a master stroke with the X6. People who buy these/x3/x5/range rover sport etc will never care about off road ability over fashion.

The Porsche Cayenne has no option of off road wheels/tires combination and when was the last time a Range Rover sport rolled past with anything less than sport contact rubber or 24" wheels?

There will (unfortunately) be a market for these vehicles until the fuel costs in the uk get so high everyone will be driving a small diesel or hybrid!!

Bob Cat Brian July 17, 2010 11:19 PM

I would never, ever, want to own an X6 but celebrate it's existence in this politically correct enviromental time we live in. As said above, what better way to give the establishment two fingers, and if you don't like it don't buy it!

Liam F July 19, 2010 9:33 AM

The establishment? However defined, do you honestly think the establishment even notices the phallically-challenged, let alone cares what cars they buy?

overboost July 19, 2010 2:40 PM

Thze more expensive the 4x4 the less off-road it will go.After all the repairs and repairing scratches would be enormous! If Land Rover offered the Range Rover in 2WD I think it would be the best seller! After all the Nissan Qashqui sales are almost all 2WD and its just a car in a 4x4 body.
