'Folk Makt' helps save Saab

Hilton Holloway

I must admit I had given up on Saab, as much as I’ve rooted for the company over the years. It was, surely, only a few signatures from the scrapper.

But Saab has been saved at the 12th hour, sold by General Motors to Dutchman Victor Muller, who’s also the boss of Dutch supercar minnow Spyker.

Saab sale confirmed

I’ve just been on the phone to Saab Spyker’s Trollhatten HQ and have been told that the original product plan is back on. And Jan-Ake Jonsson – who worked incredibly hard last year to keep Saab alive, but was removed by GM two weeks ago – will get back his job as company boss.

The new 9-5 will be built at the HQ, alongside the current three-model 9-3 line-up. Saab will buy finished 9-4X SUVs from GM’s Mexico factory. All of which is assuming that the Swedish government underwrites the European Investment bank loan that will keep Saab rolling

And, as far as I can gather, the next 9-3 will be assembled from the best components that Saab engineers can assemble from global suppliers, massively reducing development costs and, possibly, ushering in the age of the ‘virtual’ car company.

But that’s for the future - today’s story is the incredible way that Saab was saved from certain death by a global alliance of enthusiasts and web site activism.

Anybody who’s glad to see Saab survive should be thanking Steven Wade, a local government employee from Tasmania. His enthusiasts website Saabs United (nee Trollhattan Saab) has been the notice board for Saab enthusiasts the world over.

From this website had come a daily feed of inside information and, latterly, the foundation for the global ‘Saab Support Convoys’ demonstrations.

If you think that’s an overstatement, check this. When Victor Muller signed the documents, the first thing he did was call Steven in Australia and tell him that Saab had been sold.

Apparently, Muller said that site’s concentration of global support from Saab enthusiasts had made all the difference to him when he was struggling to get GM to do a deal.

What we’ve seen today is just how much the Internet has changed the world. You’ve heard all the e-buzzwords about ‘the wisdom of crowds’ and the power of the ‘nudge’.

Today, a chap in a house on a small island about far away from Sweden as its possible to get has corralled the support of the world’s Saab enthusiasts, helping force the world’s largest car maker to sell, rather than close, Saab.

In Sweden they call it Folk Makt. The rest of us call it people power.

The only thing remaining is for the new 9-5 to knock our socks off. Saab has a lot to live up to.

The Tasmanian Devil bit GM in the ar$e and won.

Even if the 9/5 is a bit lame, can't Autocar just say it's the best car in the world, like you have with the XF? You have the power...

HiltonH January 26, 2010 9:36 PM

W124...something tells me that you don't 'have a reason to believe..'

And we'd look pretty dumb pushing some weighty same-again front-driver. However, I hear from a Swedish hack (who is a Saab sceptic) that the 9-5 is actually really good to drive.

Hilton, surely the time is now right for your photo to be changed to one of you smiling.....

One things for sure, when the new 9-5 hits the streets it will generate more initial interest than most other cars.  I've no doubt it will get excellent reviews!!

Indeed there is a lot resting on the abilities of the new 9-5. Sharing a few nuts and bolts with the Insignia might suggest that the Saab engineers have had a decent starting point for once, so lets hope that a Phoenix flies from the ashes and not an asmatic turkey.

As a long time saabsunited follower I have to echo everything you said about Steven Swade!  He has done an utterly amazing job bringing the Saab world together and motivating everyone when things looked bleak!  Thank you Steven and everyone who supported Saab in their time of need!

As this is Autocar and not Facef*** there's no "I like" button but I'd be clicking on it if there was.

So many names...Swade...Ryan Emge of Saabhistory, UKSaabs, SaabClub Nederland, those who attended the first convoy in Detroit, SOCGB and Josephine Gatsonides who arranged the UK Convoy, and Jan-Ake THE MAN who tried to swim against the corporate GM tide....and all the Saab enthusiasts....

Griffin UP!

Saab would benfit from making its own cars not using parts from GM a lot of people never liked the saab because it was a posh over priced vauxhall vectra. Im sure the enthusiasts would love saab to go back to making its own cars from scratch and not raiding a GM parts bin, if they can pull it off then it should be good for them. they swedish not american

Hilton, at least you didn't revel in the hard times, we can't say the same of much of the rest of the UK motoring press, cough CAR cough TG cough!

Hello Hilton

I love Jags, I really do - just not the XF - It's just not my cup of tea in the way it looks or drives. I totally agree with you on the outgoing XJ though. An utterly magnificent and under-rated vehicle. I really think the radical shift in design of the new model is poorly timed and think the XF is as radical as Jaguar should have gone. I would argue that the move toward simplicity for the new 7, the S'class, the Lexus LS460/L5600 and new A8 shows that Jaguar design is is still operating on reference points that are slightly out of date. I hope, and slightly suspect, that I'm wrong.

What a driving force that Swade has been. Told people to e-mail to Ed Whitacre whatever his name is and I did telling him I would not by a GM product again and explaning how Mr X factor got stuffed at Xmas by an on line campaign and I don't even own a SAAB. Love SAAB Hate GM, Love United Hate Glazer. Power To The People.

"And we'd look pretty dumb pushing some weighty same-again front-driver"

You say that as if FWD is a bad thing?

It is the best thing when the weather is the way it is now. Last week I drove 800 km with winter tyres dated 1992. Thanks to my Saab, I could overtake an Opel that was driving 80 on a 100 kph road. He was driving on dry road, while I had to jump into the snow to pass by. My old tyres offered absolutely no grip, but the 9000 persevered. (I since bought new tyres because the old ones had cracks running along each side)

How about a test on an icy lake somewhere? Pitch some AWD cars against any FWD Saab.

That said, yes, the new 9-5 is heavy. But I'm hoping the new and improved suspension makes up for some of that weight. And not to forget: Adding even more metal to keep other cars from pushing various car parts into your body is probably a good thing, but it won't make the car weigh less. Those unfortunate to end up in an accident will probably not complain about that extra weight.

So, how about it? Why aren't we seeing more _real_ road tests? Why are all cars tested under good sunny conditions? (or at most a light drizzle) How come I've only seen one test pointing out the BMW 5-series tendency to dangerously over steer if loaded near max capacity?

I think Saabsunited managed to bring a huge number of Saab fans together, and allowed them to shout out loud how much they love Saab.

The two main authors (Swade and Eggs'n'Grits) are both enthusiastic for the brand, as many of us are.  It is heartening how much effort they have put in to helping give Saab a chance.   The management and workforce of Saab are genuinely different, and deserve this.

Alot of thanks have to go to all the bidders for Saab; they have all played a part in forcing GM to do the right thing.

It truly is heartening to see that the punter (ie us) can help sway decisions!

SF695 January 28, 2010 2:28 AM

Now, let's just hope that the ties to GM will be permanently cut as soon as posible.

Because frankly Saab made better cars in the past, than any of the other rubbish that has come from GM over the years.

In the old days you knew, that bying a Saab was bying quality, that equaled or surpassed many of the german premium brands

The 6 speed box on my 55 plate 93 destroyed all confidence in this GM plagued car maker.  Fingers crossed they re-establish their good name.
