BMW wants an eco-brand, and it won't be Mini

BMW has admitted that it wants a new, more eco-friendly brand. The Munich company is under increasing pressure to create 'green' cars, and despite the addition of the Efficient Dynamics technology to both BMW and Mini models, it's believed that further action needs to be taken. There has been speculation over whether the Triumph badge (which BMW owns) will be revived as the new 'green' brand. Others believe the easy answer is to expand the Mini range. But according to Stefan Krause, head of Sales and Marketing at BMW, there will be no further Mini models after the impending Crossover vehicle. It's feared that expanding the range too much will dilute the 'quirky appeal' that is fuelling the lucrative Mini sales – over 220,000 units were sold last year. Part of the incentive behind creating this eco-brand is new fuel-economy targets due to be set in the US, and likely to come to the EU, which would see manufacturers being charged for selling cars that don't meet the set emission standards. There are no official details on how BMW plans to create another marque, nor what the name might be, but expect to hear more about the eco-brand from Munich before too long.If you can't wait that long, find out all the inside details about BMW's new brand by reading the blog from our industry expert, Hilton Holloway.
