AMG has no plans to follow its great rival BMW M into producing high-performance diesels

AMG has no plans to follow its great rival BMW M into producing high-performance diesels. AMG boss Ola Kallenius said such a move would introduce too many compromises to its performance-focused line-up.

Citing the example of AMG’s new twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8, he said: “The technology of performance gasoline engines is converging with diesel tech. Direct injection, downsizing and turbocharging are all having an effect.

“We looked at diesel a few years back, but petrol engines have obvious benefits of sound, weight, agility and response.”

I can see where AMG is coming

I can see where AMG is coming from – cars perform well with petrol engines, and introducing a new engine that works with super diesel might not work. Diesel may have its own advantages, but AMG has done the right move of improving existing engines.

Why would anyone want a diesel performance car apart of a sporty badge and looks? Surely not because because of the environment - these engines won't last...

Simply because of the running costs, ask any fleet manager why they choose diesel and not petrol.

Re: AMG says no to super-diesels

I agree with Mercedes. Its a bit of a strange economy have a super diesel - a fuel which was primarily used for its economy attributes. I suppose you could argue that you want to be able to drive economically when you want to, but be a bit of a hooligan in the same care when the mood takes you. The only counter argument would be price/real world value. I agree with Mercedes. But well done BMW.
