The company will add to the range with a larger SUV, set to compete with the Hyundai Santa Fe

The recently launched SsangYong Korrando is set to spearhead a brace of new models from the Korean SUV and crossover specialist.

In 12 months time the company will add to the range with a larger SUV, set to compete with the Hyundai Santa Fe.

The new car is likely to herald the return of the Musso nameplate and will be available in both front and four-wheel-drive variants. It will also be powered by a new SssangYong-engineered 2.2-litre diesel engine and a Merc-sourced four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine.

A year later SsangYong will launch a small SUV, which company insiders claim will compete head-on with the Nissan Juke. It will be built on an all-new platform and with the company’s recent acquisition by Indian SUV specialist Mahindra, the new model may also be made in India.

Further afield the large Rexton 4x4 will be replaced too. Company insiders claim that it’s likely to continue being a traditional body on frame 4x4 as there is still a global market for such a car, with excellent off-road abilities and a large towing capacity.

Re: Ssangyong reveals model plans

Apparently Ssangyong are giving the Korando a 250,000 mile 5 year warranty. Now cynics, myself included, would say that if the company has another bout of failure, this isn't worth the paper it's printed on, but at least it shows they're putting their reputation on the line. The car looks good, however, unlike the Rodius which was SO wrong in SO many ways. There's a dealer near where I used to live, so I'll pay a visit when the car is available in the UK, just to see if their confidence is justified.

I'd say there's every chance; at least there should be.
