Tata has increased production of its popular new Nano city car by a fifith this month to keep up with strong demand.

Earlier this year a lottery had to be held to decide the first 100,000 Nano customers after more than 200,000 applied to own one of the cars. Deliveries began in the summer, but production has had to be increased to keep up with the demand.

Rajiv Dube, head of Tata's passenger car business, told reporters in India: “In the last three months, we have been averaging about 2500 Nano [sales] per month.

“We are gearing up for a higher number and we are ramping up our production capacity by 20 per cent from this month.”

The increase in production will allow Tata to sell more than 3000 Nanos per month. A Euro-spec model is expected to be launched by 2011 and it should be the cheapest production car in the UK when it goes on sale.
